Research Design and Practice in Transnational and Global Studies
This course is designed as an intensive cross-disciplinary doctoral workshop covering research design in transnational studies, especially in an Asian regional context. Research projects about transnational social and political processes are often faced with the challenge of how to track and analyze social processes as they reach beyond national boundaries. With a focus on transnational processes in the East/South-East Asian region, but open also to other global regional foci, the course will include a series of lectures by leading scholars in Asian Transnational Studies.

授業計画
The course is designed as a block seminar, taking place from 9:00 to 17:00
during September 18 – 24 (including
an excursion on Saturday, Sept. 21, but not meeting on Sept. 23 due to
national holiday).
授業の方法
Students will present their research to this community of scholars and receive comments and guidance on how to develop transnational methodologies and modes of analysis.
成績評価方法
active participation in class discussions (60%), one presentation during the class(40%).

The course will be co-organized by Professor Karen Shire (Comparative Sociology and Japan Studies), Professor Nele Noesselt (Political Science and Chinese Politics) both from the University Duisburg-Essen, and Professor Kaori Hayashi (Sociology of Mass Media and Journalism Studies), The University of Tokyo.
