多文化共生・統合人間学講義Ⅴ

Teaching for Intercultural Understanding
Economic, cultural, and communicative globalization have brought people from different cultural contexts together like never before. With these encounters come opportunities to share new knowledge and perspectives and tackle pressing issues of global concern. But inherent in many of these encounters are challenges to communication and understanding grounded in the human tendency toward bias, stereotyping, and cultural essentialism. In this course we will actively explore these and other related issues as they manifest in classrooms, and consider the roles of teachers, students, schools, universities, and education policymakers in fostering intercultural understanding and communicative competence.

We will engage with leading scholarship in the field, representations in the media, and our own educational experiences to explore both instructor-and student-directed topics. Students will develop skills in academic reading, writing, presentation, and discussion. The course will be of particular relevance for those with an interest in teaching and educational leadership.
