Materials Systems and Dynamics V

Electron spin and chemical reactivity Due to the situation with Covid-19, this course will be conducted entirely online. There will be live online Q&A sessions with Prof. Woodward on Tuesdays at 10.30am, but as not all students may be able to attend these, it will be possible to obtain all information and undertake all activities asynchronously i.e. there will be no penalty to students who cannot attend the online class.
This course is concerned with the influence that quantum mechanical electron spin can have on the rate and yield of chemical reactions. The course focuses on reaction intermediates known as Spin Correlated Radical Pairs (SCRPs) and discusses their importance, particularly in photochemistry, focussing on how they allow chemical reactions to respond to magnetic fields. The course will cover the Radical Pair Mechanism in detail, including quantum mechanical treatments based on density matrix formulation. The significance of SCRPs to important biological problems such as animal navigation and the influence of environmental electromagnetic fields on human health will be discussed.

授業の方法
Each week there will be a video lecture and an activity to complete. The activities will range from problem sheets to writing code in Matlab. All materials can be downloaded from the course website on ITC-LMS and completed offline. Live classes on Tuesdays at 10.30 will be an online discussion for exploring the ideas and answering any questions arising watching the lectures.
成績評価方法
Due to the fact that this course is being delivered entirely online, the details of the assessment are still being determined and will be announce in due course (and this syllabus will be updated at that time).
