Museum and Cultural Representations
This course will focus on the dynamics of cultural representations in contemporary society through the lens of museums. The instructor's geographic focus is Hawai'i but the class will spend considerable amount of time talking about cultural representations of and in Japan. The class combines readings with exploring some visits to actual sites to enhance awareness and understanding of the narratives embedded in museum representations. Particular attention will be paid to the dynamics of representations of race and gender.

授業計画
We will be reading academic articles every week to gain a solid theoretical understanding of cultural representations and also to discuss concrete issues. The class is discussion-based and active participation is required in every class session.
授業の方法
Students are expected to do all the readings and come prepared to engage in discussions every week. (This is not an appropriate class for those whose preference is to listen to lectures.) We will be visiting some museums during the semester to contextualize the theoretical readings we do in class in actual practice.
成績評価方法
Attendance, participation, a small project and a final paper. Details will be give on the first day of class.

A detailed syllabus will be provided on the first day (October 13). All the reading materials will be available electronically through our library system.

履修上の注意
This will be an online class. The first day of class is October 5 at 1300. Note there will be no class on October 12, so any students wishing to register for this class must attend the session on October 5. For museum visits, the students are expected to bear the cost of transportation and admission fee.

Those who completed this course last year are welcome to join, as the reading materials and discussion topics will be different. However, the overall theme will be the same.
