A range of topics are addressed, from the individual and society or sovereignty and nation, to freedom and tradition or rights and citizenship. Precise details of the syllabus with relevant thinkers will be outlined at the start of the course.
In essence, IPT is as much an invitation as an introduction to critical thinking. While introductions map out a territory and lay the groundwork for more detailed research, invitations beckon and invite students to:
1) critically examine and assess key social and political ideas and concepts, both orally and in writing;
2) appreciate the nuances of persuasive and sophisticated language in debates about politics, society, the economy and who we are more generally;
3) develop an ability in scrutinising to what extent theories enable us to understand and explain facts and values - instead of simply learning the facts and values themselves;
4) and, finally, broaden their perspective on many of today’s problems, together with their potential resolution.
