The National Theatre. Japan and Europe in comparison II
The National Theatre. Japan and Europe in Comparison II
The notion of staging the nation, of representing as well as reflecting the people in the theatre, of constituting or even standing in for an absent or imperfect national identity, emerges in the European Enlightenment and takes concrete shape from the 18th century on. Many so-called National Theatres created during the twentieth century were less involved with cultural consolidation than with the interest of the local government in projecting an image of cultural achievement that would meet European standards. The seminar will discuss national theatres, their different manifestations in terms of their “European” standards, organization, public support, programs and public role in Europe and Japan. The focus of this seminar will be on national theatres established in the 20th century.
