Applied Japanese (2): Everyday Conversation (L1) 
This course is designed for L1 students. In this course, students will acquire communicative skills for daily life situations using basic Japanese. Specifically, by the end of the course, students are expected to be able to
1)communicate in a simple and direct exchange of information on socially familiar matters;
2)gain accuracy, fluency and natural pronunciation;
3)put acquired knowledge of grammar and vocabulary into practice;.
4)develop self-monitoring and autonomous learning abilities and
5)gain sociocultural and sociolinguistic knowledge that is required to communicate in Japanese

Details will be provided in the first class meeting.
授業の方法
Each session is roughly divided into the following three parts: listening practices, oral and conversation practices, and sociocultural and sociolinguistic awareness rising activities. To develop listening comprehension skills, students will have a lot of input and a variety of listening materials in every session. To interact and communicate fluently and naturally in a given situation, student will engage in a lot of oral practices and activities. Students will be given a lot of outside of class assignments to prepare for and revise each lesson.
成績評価方法
The performance on following items will be taken into account for the course grade: 1) Participation in class activities 2) Assignments 3) Role play and skit performances 4) Exams and quizzes Further details will be provided in the first class meeting.

(ISBN:978-4-87217-721-3) Students are expected to purchase the textbook and download the audio materials from the website of the publisher (https://www.ask-books.com/*****) before the semester starts. The textbook can be purchased at online stores. Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.jp/*****) Rakuten Books (https://books.rakuten.co.jp/*****) Honto (https://honto.jp/*****) University Co-op (https://www.utcoop-join.jp/*****) also sells textbooks online this semester. Registration is required prior to purchase. You can use online translation tools such as DeepL Translator (https://www.deepl.com/*****) to read the Co-op website written in Japanese.

履修上の注意
This course is offered to KOMSTEP/USTEP L1 students only. Students are requested to activate their own UTokyo account and familialize themselves with UTAS and ITC-LMS before the S1 semester starts.

[[IMPORTANT NOTES]]] As of 10 April 2020 As was annunced by the university, S1 semester of AY 2020 is expected to start from the 20 April. Once the semester kicks off, all the courses will be conducted online using ITC-LMS, Zoom and other web-based resourses. In the meantime, students are requested to make the following preparations: 1) Please read the instructions on the Course-Related Websites indicated above. The website is all written Japanese, however, English translation is available by clicking on the hyper-link "English (Google Translation)" located upper-left corner of the page. 2) Please activate UTokyo Account. 3) Familialize yourself with the following ICT systems: UTAS, ITC-LMS. 4) Please prepare a web-cam and a microphone that can be connected to your PC or tablet. Also try to secure a broadband internet connection, if possible. Access from a public Wi-Fi is not recommendable. 5) Please purchase the textbook before the first class meeting starts on the 20th of April. In addition, download the audio materials accompanying the textbook. (For further details, refer to the "Textbook" above.) (Optional) Mock Zoom Session Mock Zoom sessions are scheduled as follows: Monday, 13 April 13:00, 14:00 (JST) These mock sessions aim at familializing students with online learning environments. Attendance is OPTIONAL. Try to access the Zoom meeting for this course from your PC or tablet if you are keen in taking this course. The Zoom meeting room URL, ID, ***** ***** be made know later on this syllabus page. You do not have to join all the sessions above; try to do so either of the sessions.
