Materials Chemistry I
Materials chemistry I will focus on understanding the relationship between structures and properties of organic molecules. This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to Organic Chemistry (Professor Nakamura), which serves as an essential foundation for understanding materials chemistry. Materials Chemistry II will cover Inorganic Chemistry, which will be taught by Professor Uchida.

Planned Schedule Week 1* (April 9th): Alkanes, aromatic rings, nomenclature, structure, orbitals and bonding Week 2 (April 16th): Alkenes and alkynes Week 3 (April 23rd): Stereochemistry Week 4* (May 7th): Rings and substituted alkanes Week 5 (May 14th): Substitution reactions Week 6 (May 21th): Elimination reactions Week 7* (May 28th): Addition reactions (electrophilic additions to alkenes) Week 8 (June 11th): Additions to pi-bonds Week 9 (June 18th): Dienes and the allyl system Week 10* (June 25th): Aromaticity Week 11 (July 2nd): Substitution reactions of aromatic compounds Week 12 (July 9th): Carbonyl chemistry (addition reactions) Week 13* (July 16th): Research topics in Organic Chemistry Final Examination (Date: TBA) Class with *’s will be the scheduled quiz day (actual schedule may vary).
授業の方法
(1) Handouts will be uploaded on ITC-LMS (same ID & password as u-task) one day before the class. (2) Assignments, quizzes, and final examination will be given (details will be provided in class). (3) Office hours will be provided in addition to the regular lectures.
成績評価方法
Assignments: 30% Short quizzes: 30% Final examination: 40%

履修上の注意
Reading textbook both prior and after each lecture is strongly recommended. **For the first class on April 9th, short quiz will be provided at the beginning of the class, so do not be late! Materials covered in the first quiz will be the review materials from the General Chemistry class (Professor Woodward’s class). Make sure you know the fundamental materials, i.e., Lewis dot structure, octet rule, formal charge, hybridization…etc. If you want to review the materials, refer to Jones: Ch. 1.3–1.5, (1.7)
