学融合プログラム「グローバル・スタディーズ」の必修科目・グローバル教養実践演習（Praxis in Global Liberal Arts）との合併授業。
交換留学プログラムで東京大学に来ている多様なバックグラウンドを持つ学生たちとともに学び、活動の場を共有することを通して国際的な視野を身につけ、多言語・多文化的状況下での実践力を養うことを目指す。
「視える東京/視えない東京」をテーマとし、「東京」という空間について多角的にアプローチする。最初の4～5回は講義とディスカッションが中心となるが、その後はグループに分け、TAの補助の下に学生同士のプロジェクトベースのグループワークを中心に進める。グループワークにはグループの研究テーマに基づく、東京（近郊）におけるフィールドワークも含まれる。
学期半ばに（懇親会も兼ねた）グループワークの中間発表の場を設ける。最終報告会を7月13日に、21KOMCEE・西館 Lecture Hallにて行う。
★★以上は通常時に行っている方式であり、今学期（2020年度Sセメスター）のプログラムは大幅に変更する。とりわけフィールドワークは行わず、長めのエッセイ・ライティングに変更する。★★
This course aims to create a space for students from a variety of backgrounds to work together to discover and explore different aspects of the city of Tokyo, which are not always apparent to a casual observer. It will focus on the question of the city's "visibility/invisibility". What do you see on the surface of the city? What is hidden underneath, tucked in, or pushed aside? Students can approach these questions in a number of ways, looking at, for example, the urban infrastructure, minority communities, the untold historical past, or simply, the pre-modern past whose remnants we find on the verge of extinction between high-rise buildings.
While the course will be a combination of in-class activities (lecture and discussion) and project-based group work initiated by students, more emphasis is put on the latter. Project-based group work includes a fieldwork in (or near) Tokyo, interim presentation and final group presentation in a large lecture hall (scheduled on July 13). It is essential that students participate in all the activities.
★★The above is the programme in a normal period. The programme for this semester (2020 S-semester) will be changed significantly. In particular, no fieldwork will be conducted. Instead, writing a long essay on relevant topics will be assigned.★★

授業計画
The first four weeks will be largely lecture-based. Each week, reading assignments will be set. At the beginning of classes, short test will be conducted based on the reading.
6 April: Cancelled
13 April: Guidance
20 April: Short test (30min), lecture on postwar Tokyo
27 April: Film viewing ('Tokyo Story'), analysis report *extending to 6th period
11 May: Short test (30min), lecture on minorities and refugee in Tokyo
18 May: Short test (30min), lecture on representations of Tokyo in sub-culture (comics and animations)
The subsequent 7 weeks (from 25 May to 6 July) are the period for writing a long essay (approximately 7000 words) individually or groupw ***** Themes and some of crucial readings will be presented. Students are to choose theirown topic from them. TAs and I will advise and check your progress during this time.
25 May ～ 6 July: Essay writing
13 July If possible (depending on the circumstances), final presentation will be conducted based on essay.

授業はすべて英語で行う。積極的に参加することが求められるが、英語能力についての条件はない。
後期課程の学生を歓迎する。登録方法その他の詳細は初回に説明する。UTAS上の登録だけでなく、初回授業での指示に従い別途登録すること。海外からの学生とのバランスをとるため人数制限する場合もある。
To retain a balance of ratio between local students and international students, we may have to limit the number of enrollment. In the event that there are more students than we can take, students will be chosen by lottery. Those who are interested in taking the course must come to the first class. Instructions on signing up for the class will be given then. To be officially enrolled in this course, students must sign up in class and get approval. Please note that registering on UTAS does not automatically mean you will be enrolled.
