広域英語圏地域論演習[イギリス研究コース]

Australian Peoples
Who are Australians and where, in a big continent, do they live? If more than half of Australians today either were born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas, what does this say about ideas of ‘home’ and national identity? This course is an exploration of the changing composition of the Australian population, including where Australians live, and also the changing patterns of people movements in and out of Australia. It draws on statistical and survey data, enabling students to develop their skills in these fields. It enables students to appreciate how significant demographic change has occurred, including for Indigenous Australians before and after white settlement. The course brings together demography with immigration, social, cultural and political perspectives, and it draws on film (eg Silver City, Floating Life), literature, and case studies of certain groups and individuals. The changing ethnic composition of Australian sporting teams is another lens through which to consider Australian society.

授業計画
This course begins with Australia’s demographic history, who occupied the land, and how this changed over time. It enables students to understand relationships between different peoples and the land they occupied; and it provides the basis for understanding points of difference and tension between different groups in Australia. The course draws on primary (including census and other data) and secondary materials suited to political, social and cultural perspectives on Australians and their land; and it also invites students to consider life stories as sources.
