The soaring food prices in 2007-2008 caused serious social unrest due to food shortages in various parts of the world. Under the threatening concerns of climate change and the deterioration of the production basis, the sustainable and stable food supply is a globally important issue. The purposes of this course are to increase the understandings of the various problems related food production and to deepening the insight for the possible measures to them.

授業の方法
Venue : Lecture Room is Bld. 7B, 236/237 (Seminar Room) 1. The lectures from #1 to #7 will be based on the content of the textbook by V. Smil along with some additional references. The student is assumed to have read the chapter beforehand, and will be asked "Which paragraph was most impressive, and why?" during the lecture. 2. The lectures #8 and #9 will be to summarize the FAO document by Alexandratos & Bruinsma as listed below. 3. The last part of this course (#10 to #13) will be for the students to address topics assigned to them in group presentations.
成績評価方法
Attendance (30) , group presentation (40) the report(30) will be evaluated at the end of the semesters. The theme of the report will be chosen by the students based on the consultation with the professors.

The lecture is given in English. Note that this is a joint lecture with Global Plant Resources (3910108), and that the student must choose either of the two lectures on registration.
