Cultures of the World at Minpaku (National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka)
This course aims to explore various aspects of trans-regional cultural exchanges through the active use of ethnological resources in the collection of the National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku) in Osaka.
Topics that will be dealt with during this course are: interaction between the global and the regional, problems of cultural translation, world religions, humans and the environment. Special focus is placed on West Asia and the Islamic world.

授業計画
The course will be conducted at the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka (10-1 Senri Expo Park, Suita) over a period of 5 days between January 28 (Sun) - February 1 (Thu), 2018. Jan. 28 (Sun) 13:00 Registration, 13:30-14:30 Introduction and orientation, 14:30-17:00 Visit Permanent Exhibition Jan. 29 (Mon) 10:00-12:00 Tour of facilities, 13:30-17:00 Lecture and workshop on material culture of the Islamic world Jan. 30 (Tue) 10:00-12:00 Thematic discussion, 13:30-17:00 Group activity and discussion Jan 31 (Wed) Fieldwork excursion to museums in Kansai area Feb. 1 (Thus) 10:00-12:00 Group presentations, 13:30-14:30 Essay test, 14:30-15:00 Final discussion
授業の方法
Lectures and a guided tour of the various functions of the museum will be followed by workshops where students will be assigned tasks using museum resources. Assignments will include field excursions in the Kansai area. Students will have free access to the internet, the in-house library, and the permanent exhibition during the duration of the course.
成績評価方法
Student performance will be evaluated according to the level of participation in class discussions and group or individual project assignments, and a final short essay. Full attendance is required in this intensive course.
