"Immigration Politics and Policy: Japan in Global Perspective
International migration is currently one of the most difficult challenges facing policymakers in advanced democracies. This course will explore how this challenge has been addressed in Japan – a "new" country of immigration. Through comparative lenses, we will review the state-of-the-art theoretical and empirical literature that delivers analytical tools required to grapple intelligently with the fundamental questions surrounding the politics of immigration in Japan. The course will explore the following themes: the question of borders, policy actors and venues, economic and forced migration, migration and security, migration and international relations, the ethics of immigration control, citizenship, trans-nationalism and diaspora politics, and immigrant integration and multiculturalism, among others
