This course explores many of the important issues in the field of Pacific Island Studies and American Studies through reading some of the latest works. In particular, we will be focusing on dynamics of cultural representations--how culture is narrated and what kind of power is embedded in the making of such narratives. The readings will be selected from such journals as "American Quarterly." Another component of this course is to discuss the meaning and method of academic discussion and writing in English. We will spend some time on the issues related to composing academic papers, including such topics such as thesis, abstract, footnotes as well as plagiarism.
