Basic Ocean Sciences
The ocean contains about 97% of the terrestrial water and regulates Earth's climate. Photosynthesis at the surface of the ocean supports not only fertile ecosystem but also influences the global geochemical cycle within the water column. Plate tectonics controls the dynamics beneath the seafloor including volcanism, hydrothermal activity, and other processes. Altogether, interaction among individual portions of the ocean constructs the major part of the Earth system. In other words, no one can understand the Earth without subtle knowledge of the ocean. In this class, general introduction to the related scientific aspects will be presented as collaborative effort of Departments of Earth and Planetary Science and Biological Sciences.
