(Nishihara) The lectures deal with the topics on electron transfer and electronic functions of metal complexes as follows; 1) Introduction, 2) Intermolecular electron transfer and Marcus theory, 3) Photo-induced electron transfer, 4) Electron transfer in biological systems – Photosynthesis, 5) Electrochemical reactions – thermodynamics and kinetics, and 6) Electrochemical measurements. (Tashiro) The aim of this series of lectures is to overview the roles of metal ions in biological systems and to explain the structure-function relationships in metallo-enzymes and nucleic acid-metal complexes in detail. In addition, comparison of enzymatic reactions vs artificial reactions will be discussed, taking examples of activation of small molecules. 1) Biogenic metal ions and cofactors 2) Structures and functions of active centers of metallo-enzymes 3) Interactions between nucleic acids and metals 4) Activation of small molecules
