Structural analysis of photoinduced phase transitions.
Multifunctional materials evidence changes of physical properties when excited by light, such as photomagnetism, photoconductivity or photochromism. If the change of electronic state is an important component of the change of physical properties, the structural reorganization plays a central role in the trapping and stabilization of the photoinduced state and symmetry changes may also be involved in the process. Femtosecond structural techniques developed at X-FEL (X-ray free electron laser), or electron diffraction, allow for real time watching of electronic and structural reorganizations on the femtosecond timescale. During this lecture we will introduce basics of crystallography, X-ray or electron diffraction and scattering and introduce ultrafast pump-probe techniques. Diverse scientific cases will illustrate what can be learned at the electronic, atomic or molecular scale on photoinduced phase transitions.

Nonlinear optical spectroscopy has become a powerful bioimaging tool for the sensitive detection of various biomolecules. In this lecture, we will learn about the fundamentals of the nonlinear interactions of light with molecules using the density matrix, and then learn about advanced molecular imaging methods that use nonlinear optical processes.
The lecture syllabus will cover
1. the Schrödinger equation and the quantum Liouville equation;
2. the nonlinear interactions of light with molecules;
3. various nonlinear optical processes, especially nonlinear Raman scattering; and
4. molecular imaging using nonlinear optical processes.
