観測天文学特別講義VIII
Development of Modern Ground-based Optical Telescopes
This course strives to give the student a top-level overview of the conceptualization and development of modern ground-based optical telescopes. The emphasis will be on technical development but some program management details will be included. Subjects to be covered include project planning and structure, systems engineering, project phases, and key issues in telescope and facility design and construction. Students will be asked at the end to apply what they learn to selected telescope projects.

授業計画
The course consists of 6 units conducted over the space of 2 weeks. The class meets afternoons on April 12, 19, and 26 (2 units each day). A take-home final exam will be conducted following the last class meeting.
授業の方法
Lectures covering the subject matter will be given in the first 4 meetings. Mid-way through the course, student teams will be assigned research topics related to the contemporary ground-based telescope projects applying concepts covered in the first half. Team members will present their results to the class during sessions 5 and 6.
成績評価方法
Students will be evaluated on their oral presentations and written final exam.
