Japanese collections in European museums: ethnographic and archaeological materials
Japanese collections in European museums: ethnographic and archaeological materials
This course examines collections of Japanese ethnographic and archaeological items in Europe from the first interaction in the Edo period until today. After outlining the role of museums through time, as well as the motivations of private collectors, the course will focus on the history and aims of European collecting practices and related scholarship on Japan and Japanese culture.
For example, the earliest acquisition of Japanese collections, by the personnel of the Dutch trading post Dejima in Nagasaki (such as the physician von Siebold) between 1815 and 1830, whose unique trade relation with Sakoku Japan provided excellent opportunities for collecting Japanese material culture, will be examined.
For the modern context, case studies from European museums will investigate the ways in which archaeological and ethnographic collections are presented to the public in exhibitions nowadays. Have exhibition content, value systems and ethics changed through time? How do modern museums aim to create exciting exhibitions and attract new visitors?
The course will be conducted in English.
