The Image of Japan in Anglo-American Literature: Narratives of Tokyo

This term’s class will focus on early 21st-century novels, short stories, and essays about Japan, focusing in particular on narratives of Tokyo. We will read texts by authors including Peter Carey, David Mitchell, Ruth Ozeki, and David Peace, and watch extracts from films including Lost in Translation (2003). We will also read a couple of earlier works by Kazuo Ishiguro and Angela Carter. Over the past fifteen years, the “Japan-bashing” and superficial cultural generalisations common in writing of the 1980s and 1990s have been questioned by a new generation of Anglo-American writers, many of whom have spent long periods in Tokyo and made the city their home. We will explore how their narratives weave together Japanese and Western characters, dramatising the psychologies of both. In this new “post-Bubble” literature, Tokyo is no longer merely a site of exotic interest but increasingly a test case for global modernity. As a technologically advanced, prosperous, and vast urban space, the city can offer a vision of the coming technological utopia; or, alternatively, an opportunity to reflect on the psychological fragmentation and alienation produced by postmodern urban life. Lectures will cover topics including: - culture shock, exoticism, and eroticism - the legacy of war and natural disaster (including the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake) in fiction - the representation of major Tokyo districts (e.g. Shinjuku, Akihabara, and Ginza) - the psychological dramatisation of Tokyo dwellers - linguistic and stylistic cross-overs between Japanese and Western literature. The class language will be English. This seminar is open to all and no prior knowledge of English literature is required.

You students are expected to learn the abilities and knowledge of Sociotechnology by case method. In the first half of the semester, using orthodox case method, you will learn methods to analyze problem and a logical process to reveal fundamental cause(s). In the second half, you will learn skills to create new idea based on existing cases. The innovation workshop method by the University of Tokyo i.school (http://ischool.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ ) will be employed. You will finally acquire the competency to practice the methods and knowledge of Sociotechnology to solve social problems in the real world.
