Historiography of Modern Japan

This is a seminar course designed to explore the field of modern Japanese history through its historiography. The course will begin by surveying various approaches to the study of history to see how Japan was constituted as an object of study. The latter part of the course will then focus on themes (such as empire, race, popular culture, etc.) in order to examine how the past has been conceptualized and historicized. Throughout the semester, emphasis will be placed on thinking about the relation between the past and the present and how this shapes the writing of history. Thus, the course is more about ideas than content. It is highly recommended that students have some knowledge of the history of modern Japan prior to taking this course.

現代科学・コミュニケーション論 Theory of Science Communication

Science communication is a multidisciplinary field for scientific researchers, which is closely related not only to outreach activity, but to scientific policy, research ethics and science journalism. This lecture confirms how science positions itself in the society, and deals with how scientific researchers should communicate with the society. We also discuss the role of science in the society after the March 11 earthquake.

This course discusses how Japan has been portrayed in post-war East Asia, and how visions of Japan in these societies have changed. In doing so, it analyses how the shifting portrayal of the Japanese ‘Other’ has influenced, or reflected, changing conceptions of national (or sub-national) ‘selves’ throughout the region. Adopting a comparative perspective throughout, a principle focus of the course will be the societies of ‘Greater China’ (the mainland People’s Republic, Taiwan and Hong Kong) and the contrasting roles that Japan has played there in official and popular discourse on history and national identity. Other lectures will discuss the cases of Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. While about half of the lectures will deal with the portrayal of Japan in school curricula and textbooks, extensive reference will also be made to other vehicles for public or popular culture, from museums and memorials to film and comics. By the end of the course, students will have a clearer sense of the historical, political and cultural forces and factors underlying the vastly differing attitudes towards Japan held by neighbouring countries across East and Southeast Asia.

There have developed quite separate debates concerning, on the one hand, the Transformation of Warfare, and Revolution in Military Affairs on the other. Conventional knowledge is that while the former approach encompasses a vast range of scholarly analysis on how war in the contemporary era might have transformed in all spheres of economy, politics and society, the latter has focused on the impact of technological advancement in a narrower sense on warfare, especially the way in which warfare has been conducted or ought to be conducted. However, to discuss changes in the character of war in these quite distinct spheres, each with specific preoccupations with no interactions, is not very conducive to a meaningful generalization about the transformation of warfare itself. The purpose of this seminar is to consider the impact of modern and contemporary technological changes, especially focusing on communication and media spheres, on the character and conduct of warfare today, hence bridging the two distinct spheres of interests.

Reading Wang Hui

In this course, we will read and discuss the book “The Politics of Imagining Asia,” written by one of the most important and influential scholars in today’s China, Wang Hui. Wang Hui is professor of Chinese literature and history at Tsinghua University in Beijing. His research interests range from Chinese intellectual history and modern literature to social and political theory. While his focus is on China, Wang Hui in the book discusses such broad topics as Orientalism, Max Weber, and the nation-state, as well as questions that have implications beyond the single country of China: Okinawa, Tibet, and the idea of Asia. One of main thrusts of Wang Hui's thought is his critique of modern knowledge that claims universality but has its peculiar origin in western Europe. As such, this course serves to challenge students to critically think about East Asia and China, both of their histories and current situation, from a series of unconventional, in particular non-Western, perspectives, and by so doing develop their capability in historical conceptualization and critical analysis.
