Risk society and governance of uncertainty

Who, in the risk society of the 21st century, decides what is and is not a risk ? This course considers the need to re-examine governance frameworks for dealing with contemporary uncertainties in different policy domains. Focusing on environmental crises and risks of scientific-technological provenance, it addresses the growing importance of emergent institutions (known as ‘boundary organisations’ or ‘science-policy interfaces’) for local, regional and global governance of uncertainty. Through short interactive lectures, case studies, scenario analysis and role-play simulations, students will engage in a critical examination of the idea of a 'World Risk Society' (Ulrich Beck). In so doing, they will explore both: 1) the implications of an understanding of risks as social constructs (or products of struggles within the context of specific relations of definitional power); 2) the possibility for new institutional arrangements interfacing science and policy to become a political force.

Elements in Cosmos: From Fundamental Interactions to Origin of Life

This is a series of lectures for the graduate students or advanced undergraduate level students providing an introduction to the application of fundamental principles of the production of atomic nuclei along the cosmic evolution. An emphasis will be placed on, first, the formation processes of the elements and, second, the molecules of life, i.e. the amino acids, in various astrophysical conditions in space from a perspective of fundamental interactions of elementary particles and nuclei. In addition, time will be devoted to the link between theory and experimentation on these subjects. Modern experiments in particle and nuclear physics will be described and how these relate to astronomical observables on the production and formation of atomic nuclei, molecules, and amino acids.

宇宙背景放射とは、宇宙全体を一様に満たす電磁波(またはその他の粒子)の放射場のことであり、様々な波長(光子エネルギー)での宇宙背景放射の起源を理解することで、宇宙全体のエネルギー分布を大局的に理解することが出来る。本講義では、宇宙背景放射の基礎的な概念や現在の理解を講義し、宇宙の全体像を把握してもらうことを目的とする。 Cosmic background radiation is a uniform radiation field in the universe. We can understand the global energetics of the universe by knowing the origins of background radiation in various wavelength. The purpose of this lecture is to understand basic concepts of background radiation to have a big picture about the universe.

「生物素材」とは、生物が作り出す再生可能な資源である「バイオマス(biomass)」から作られる様々な材料や原料のことである。石油や石炭などの化石資源の枯渇や価格の高騰によるエネルギー・資源問題、さらに大気中の二酸化炭素濃度の上昇や地球温暖化といった環境問題を解決していくためには、バイオマスをより高度に利用していくことが、未来社会ではますます重要となる。本実習では、生物素材化学専修に関連のある研究所や企業を見学し、バイオマスの利用に関わる研究や産業に関して実習する。

This course is designed for students at the advanced level. The aim of this course is to help students understand current issues in Japan and the global society through Japanese mass media as well as develop their own ideas and discuss the issues with people around them. Specifically, by the end of the course, students are expected to be able to 1) understand expressions (patterns, idioms and terms for news) used in the Japanese media including news (commentary) articles and programs provided by the internet, newspaper and TV, 2) gain adequate knowledge on some Japanese and international current topics, 3) discuss current issues with people around them in Japanese, 4) know various Japanese media and cultivate the habit of accessing them to catch up on current issues, 5) understand the features of different media and evaluate the quality of information, and 6) write short news articles and their opinions in Japanese.

In production and consumption of materials, structural materials are dominant. Technological development in materials industry affects significant positive impacts in broad end uses. A newly developed high performance materials fulfill higher design requirement, which makes more advanced product design possible. This class introduces production process of major materials and life cycle perspective on materials, especially structural materials. We discuss interactions amongst materials, finished products, economy, and environment in order to understand roles of materials in industrial metabolism. Global material flows and resource strategy are also introduced to give you a global vision on resources and materials.
