東京大学創薬機構における創薬探索実習に参加して創薬探索研究の実際を学ぶ。また、医薬品の探索研究、非臨床・臨床試験、さらに市販後安全性におよぶプロセスを網羅する講義シリーズに参加し討論する。これらの講義演習を通じて、創薬研究などの現場で社会のニーズに応え得る実践的・主体的な問題発見・解決能力を習得することを目標とする。

薬理学とは、薬と生体との相互作用を研究する学問です。なぜ、薬は効くのでしょうか。高等動物は機能の恒常性を維持するために様々な調節機能を有しています。病気はその調節機能の障害あるいは破綻の結果もたらされた状態ですが、薬はその機能を増強あるいは抑制することでもとのバランスへと回復させ病気を治します。薬はまた、生体内で無作用なものへと代謝され体外へ排出されます。薬の代謝や排泄を調べることは、薬の副作用を予想する上でとても重要です。薬の開発と安全性の確認には10年以上の歳月と200億円以上の費用がかかると言われています。なぜ新しい薬を開発する必要があるのか、問題点は何かも考えてみたいと思います。

バイオデバイスとは,ガラスやプラスチックなどの基板上に生体分子プローブやマイクロ流路などを集積化した小型の分析装置である。本講義は,バイオデバイス並びに関連する材料技術の全体像を基礎原理から応用例まで体系的に学習することを目的とする。 “Biodevice” is defined as the device that integrates micrometer-sized reactors, fluidic channels, various biosensors, etc. on a substrate, where chemical and biological analysis, cell handling, etc. are carried out. Provides fundamental knowledge required to learn biodevices and related materials science from scratch as well as such advanced topics as microarrays or point-of-care testing devices. Fundamental topics include the definition, classification and history of biodevices, downsizing and scaling low, fluid dynamics and control in micro space, component elements of microfluidic devices, microfabrication technology, and detection technology.

The course will examine the emergence of World English, and its relation to the broader narratives of pre-modern cultural encounter, the period of ascendency of European empire, and the comparatively recent emergence of post-colonial societies. It will engage with the complex debates involving twenty-first century globalization, but dispute the assumption that the dominance of a single language necessarily results in the imposition of assumptions, and emphasize the creative appropriation achieved by a wide variety of national traditions: African, Canadian, and Indian.
