Intensive 

Purpose of this course is obtaining a solid understanding and some critical skills at five levels: 1. The theoretical dilemmas of global governance in the current age; 2. The ability to unpack the process of creating global governance (comparing different arenas) 3. The ability to develop a pathway to analyze and solve governance problems; 4. A better empirical understanding of the particular historical juncture of our current period in a larger comparative perspective with a focus on the interplay between the US, the EU, Japan, and large emerging powers (China, India, Brazil) among others. 5. And empirical knowledge on four issue areas: global finance, climate change, and biosafety from the perspective of global governance, and a changing balance of power

地球史を通じて、表層環境の形成・進化および物質循環に影響を与え続ける肉眼で観察できない生命に焦点を当てる。分子系統、代謝様式および棲息環境の多様性について学び、地球環境および物質循環との係わりについて学習する。 (Throughout the Earth's history, microbial life has tremendously influenced the evolution of the surface environment and elemental cycles. The diversity with respect to molecular phylogeney, physiology and habitability of prokaryotes and the intimate relation between microbial activity and Earth's geochemical processes will be studied in this course. )

プラズマ粒子計測の手法とその応用 Methods and Applications of Space Plasma Measurements

人工衛星・観測ロケット搭載用の様々なプラズマ粒子計測装置の原理について解説した後、地球・水星・木星など磁場を持つ惑星の磁気圏や月など磁場を持たない天体の周辺空間の構造・ダイナミクス・太陽風との相互作用について、実際の観測例を元に解説し未解決の現象について議論する。 (Interaction between the solar wind and a solar system object varies largely according to the object's properties, such as the existence of a global intrinsic magnetic field and/or thick atmosphere. Recent knowledge on the structure/dynamics of the magnetized planets’ magnetosphere and plasma environment around non-magnetized bodies based on the plasma data obtained by spacecraft and /or sounding rockets as well as the instrumentation for plasma measurements are the main topics of this lecture.)

At the Science-Technology-Society Interface : For a New Understanding of Environmental Regulation in the Anthropocene

Seeking to build bridges between disciplines that do not ordinarily meet each other in the undergraduate curriculum, this course examines how science and technology interact with international, domestic, and transnational law & policy frameworks. It focuses on pressing issues in which earth and environmental sciences, biotechnology, and geoengineering increasingly link up with environmental regulation. Drawing on short lectures, case studies, scenario analysis and role-play simulations, we will examine : 1) the extent to which recent shifts in the scientific understanding of ecosystems challenge existing environmental law and policy, and urge for the development of bio- or ecocentric regulatory frameworks; 2) how emerging technologies, developed to address resource or energy problems but which often raise special concern regarding environmental protection, are/could be regulated. Through the course, we will explore from a critical perspective two main themes: 1) the co-production of natural and social orders at the macro-scale of global science and technology policy; 2) the integration of disciplinary knowledge, with a focus on the complex relationships between law and knowledge about global environmental change.

地球史を通じて、表層環境の形成・進化および物質循環に影響を与え続ける肉眼で観察できない生命に焦点を当てる。分子系統学、代謝様式、有機地球化学および生息環境の多様性について学び、地球環境および物質循環との係わりについて数値解析を用いた手法も含めて学習する。 また後半は、 地球を特徴づける生命とはいかなる存在か、DNA、進化、「かたち」をキーワードに考える。古代ゲノム学、進化発生学、そしてそれらの基礎となる分子系統学の方法論と重要な概念・成果について学ぶ。 Throughout the Earth's history, microbial life has tremendously influenced the evolution of the surface environment and elemental cycles. The diversity with respect to molecular phylogeney, physiology and habitability of microorganisms and the tight coupling of microbial activity and Earth's geochemical processes will be lectured in this course. The principle and application of organic geochemistry are also lectured. The objective of the latter half is to reconsider what is life, which characterizes the planet Earth. The key words are DNA, evolution, and 'forms'. Mention will be given to principles of and some important findings in chemical evolution, paleo-genomics, evolutionary developmental biology, morphology and molecular phylogenetics.
