“Intellectual Giants” in UTokyo: Critical Evaluation of Their Accomplishments in Contemporary Contexts

This graduate course is the first series of lectures that critically examine and evaluate the history of major intellectuals and scholars of or associated with the University of Tokyo in the modern period. By examining various intellectual legacies of one of the most important research and education institutions in Japan and the world, this course aims to generate critical understanding of modern knowledge production and circulation in relation to social change and cultural formation in Japan. By so doing, potential contribution of Japanese scholarship to the understanding of contemporary (global) issues will be explored. Every year, a specific theme or period or prominent intellectual figures will be identified for focused study and discussion, and scholars working on that specific topic are invited from within or outside of Japan to lecture and generate classroom discussions. For 2018, the lectures will focus on the question of “the social” and address the issues of how (Japanese) society has been understood by scholars of the University of Tokyo and what social implications their understanding has generated. We arranged six lectures by two sociologists, one economist, and one anthropologist to approach this set of questions.

Introduction to Language, Gender, and Sexuality

This course will provide an introduction to the field of language, gender, and sexuality using approaches from sociolinguistics. In particular we will focus on how meanings related to gender and sexuality are reproduced in spoken and written discourse, for example in conversation and in the media. Topics will include the social construction of gender and sexuality, the linguistic resources people draw on to construct gender and sexual identities, questioning prominent gender/sexuality and language stereotypes, and the intersections between gender/sexuality and other social categories. There will also be a focus on language and gender/sexuality in the Japanese context. It is hoped that students will take from this course a heightened awareness of gender/sexuality related issues of power, inequality and agency and will be better equipped to articulate and explore questions in this area.

Risk society and governance of uncertainty

Who, in the risk society of the 21st century, decides what is and is not a risk ? This course considers the need to re-examine governance frameworks for dealing with contemporary uncertainties in different policy domains. Focusing on environmental crises and risks of scientific-technological provenance, it addresses the growing importance of emergent institutions (known as ‘boundary organisations’ or ‘science-policy interfaces’) for local, regional and global governance of uncertainty. Through short interactive lectures, case studies, scenario analysis and role-play simulations, students will engage in a critical examination of the idea of a 'World Risk Society' (Ulrich Beck). In so doing, they will explore both: 1) the implications of an understanding of risks as social constructs (or products of struggles within the context of specific relations of definitional power); 2) the possibility for new institutional arrangements interfacing science and policy to become a political force.
