This course is designed to learn a great variety of research conducted at the frontier of “Sustainability Science", through the latest research outcomes of Integrated Research System in Sustainability Science (IR3S) and Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC). IR3S and SSC are research networks for establishing a new academic field “Sustainability Science" among Japanese universities, companies, municipalities and other organizations. By understanding a variety of academic fields related to sustainability and interactions among them, students will come to take part in the process of integrating several academic disciplines and establishing a new academic field “Sustainability Science". ネットワーク型研究拠点IR3S(Integrated Research System for Sustainability)ならびにSSC(Sustainability Science Consortium)におけるサステイナビリティ学研究の最先端に触れる。

Purpose The purpose of this graduate course is to expose students to understand the basic concepts and framework of public policy and governance as well as practical issues relating to sustainability in general; biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, poverty alleviation, peace-building, etc. The students will have an opportunity to learn the basic frameworks for analyzing policies and to deepen the understanding of management and policy concerns relating to sustainable development through interactive lectures, exercises, and group works. Learning Outcomes Targeted learning outcomes are: (i) conceptual understanding of policies and policy-making relating to sustainability and (ii) increased familiarity with practical aspects of management and policy concerns relating to sustainable development, especially the need for a holistic viewpoint and trans-boundary, collaborative approach. Course Description Sustainability science inquiry starts from the perception of a particular problem or a situation of individuals, organizations or a society at large, orients itself to elucidation of factors and mechanisms that explain how the problem has come about, and, as the case may be, leads to consideration of how to solve it or rectify the situation surrounding it. As such, sustainability science embraces an almost inherent inclination towards management and policy intervention. This course is designed to equip the students with both conceptual and practical tools needed to cope with management and policy-making/implementation tasks for the cause of sustainable development.

Atmospheric aerosols cause climate change through the aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions. In this intensive course introduces the mechanism of climate change due to aerosols dealing with researches with numerical models developed for evaluating effects of aerosols on the climate system. A forecasting system for PM2.5 operated as application of a numerical model is also introduced.

In order to understand the essence of environmental issues and their solution, it is necessary to understand the material cycle and energy flow. In this lecture, group discussion on "sustainability" will be offered at first to let students find out its essence. Next, lectures on ethics will be offered, that will build a basis on the understanding of following lectures. Then, material- and energy flows in natural- and industrial systems will be lectured.
