Frontier of Sustainability Science サステイナビリティ学最前線(2)

This course is designed to learn a great variety of research conducted at the frontier of “Sustainability Science", through the latest research outcomes of Integrated Research System in Sustainability Science (IR3S) and Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC). IR3S and SSC are research networks for establishing a new academic field “Sustainability Science" among Japanese universities, companies, municipalities and other organizations. By understanding a variety of academic fields related to sustainability and interactions among them, students will come to take part in the process of integrating several academic disciplines and establishing a new academic field “Sustainability Science".  ネットワーク型研究拠点IR3S(Integrated Research System for Sustainability)ならびにSSC(Sustainability Science Consortium)におけるサステイナビリティ学研究の最先端に触れる。サステイナビリティ学の関連分野の広さと相互関連性を知り、それらの統合とサステイナビリティ学創成の過程に参加する。

The main purpose of this course is to provide master’s and doctoral students with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with key concepts and principal research methodologies of Sustainability Science through lectures and systematic reading of Sustainability Science literature. By doing so, the students will be expected to deepen their understanding of various trends, as well as frontier issues, in Sustainability Science research

Targeted learning outcomes of this course are two-fold, (i) to develop familiarity with key concepts and principal methodological approaches in Sustainability Science, (ii) to deepen understanding of trends and frontier issues in Sustainability Science.

Socio-Environmental System and Sustainability

Sustainability Science is an emerging field of research dealing with the interaction between natural and social systems, and with how those interactions affect the challenge of sustainability: meeting the needs of present and future generations while substantially reducing poverty and conserving the planet’s life support systems (Kates RW, 2011). "Challenge of sustainability" is now more explained as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this regard, the essential part of sustainability science is contributing to sustainable development (meeting the needs of present and future generations while substantially reducing poverty and conserving the planet's life support systems) through understanding interaction between natural and social systems. In this course, GPSS-GLI faculty will explain such interaction between natural and social systems from their research topics or topics for education, how it is damaged and how to repair it.Through all the lecturers' "socio-environmental systems" and interaction between them, students can learn overall picture of sustainability science.

The main purpose of this course is to provide doctoral students with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with key concepts and principal research methodologies of Sustainability Science through systematic reading and surveying of Sustainability Science literature. By doing so, the students will be expected to deepen their understanding of various trends, as well as frontier issues, in Sustainability Science research. Targeted learning outcomes of this course are three-fold, (i) to develop familiarity with key concepts and principal methodological approaches in Sustainability Science, (ii) to deepen understanding of trends and frontier issues in Sustainability Science, and (iii) to improve skills for conducting literature survey.

Sustainability perspectives in environmental issues サステイナビリティ論

In order to understand the essence of environmental issues and their solution, it is necessary to understand the material cycle and energy flow. In this lecture, group discussion on "sustainability" will be offered at first to let students find out its essence. Next, lectures on ethics will be offered, that will build a basis on the understanding of following lectures. Then, material- and energy flows in natural- and industrial systems will be lectured. 環境問題の本質を理解し、その根本的な解決を図るためには、物質やエネルギーの動態の現状を理解し、それらの循環的なシステムを確立することによって、持続可能なシステムにしていく必要がある。本講義においては、まず持続可能な発展をテーマに取り上げて教員をファシリテーターとするグループ討論を行うことにより、問題点の発見・抽出を行う。続いて、環境問題へのアプローチの土台となる環境倫理と技術倫理について講義する。その上で、循環をキーワードとして、物質やエネルギーの収支に関わる実態を解説し、社会的視点を考慮した上で、循環型システムの構築に向けた取り組みのあり方について講義する。
