Knowledge of economics is not only useful for making business and private economic decisions, such as investment decisions and marketing, but is also essential as a basis for the understanding of today’s great social challenges such as global inequality and climate change. The course will discuss key concepts of microeconomics, such as demand and supply, competitive markets, and comparative advantage, and it will also examine ideas behind some basic terms of macroeconomics such as GDP and inflation. Although the knowledge of advanced mathematics is not required for course participation, it should be noted that the lectures will include discussions of some formal economic models.

Leisure and Race: Reality and Representation

This course focuses on the reality and representation of leisure with a particular focus on race and ethnicity in the United States and Japan. By reading primary and secondary documents on leisure practice and their representation in the media, we will think about questions such as: How has the meaning of leisure changed throughout the centuries? How is leisure culture created? How do racial and ethnic minorities practice leisure activities? How do race or ethnicity impact leisure practice? Why and how do people engage in leisure culture, and does it differ by race or ethnicity? How are the concepts of leisure similar and different in Japan and the United States? Are these concepts employed differently in regard to race and ethnicity in these countries? What does leisure mean to us in modern society and do we see this changing in the next few decades? The overall goal of this course is to understand the significance of leisure in a capitalistic society.

Art and Feminisms in Japan 日本における芸術とフェミニズム

Course objective: Does feminism exist in Japan? With the international gender equality survey putting Japan at 114th in the world, you may think it has always been like that here, a nation of Yamato Nadeshikos who obey and serve tea. But NO, we have had blue stockings, women’s liberation movement, 2nd wave feminism, ‘concerned housewives’ movements and more. There has been a variety of feminisms. Starting with pre-war Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-26) period women’s right advocates and female anarchists, this course surveys Japanese women’s positions in history through art – in other words, how Japanese women were represented and represented themselves in art. This is not just a historical survey: we will discuss what went wrong in terms of gender equality in Japan and how we can change it through various means.

This graduate-level development economics course builds on theories of economic development and presents recent works on development, focusing on empirical approaches. The first part of the course provides brief overviews of recent debates on development and introduces empirical literature on growth, poverty, and inequality at macro and micro levels. Then, the course will present the selected individual factors which promote development, focusing on human capital, production and technology, productivity, and the vulnerability to shocks including natural disasters. The last part considers the role of government. It will focus on recent papers on political economy and development public finance, particularly the evaluation of foreign aid and social assistance programs, infrastructure investments, redistributive policies, and regulations. The course introduces modern empirical methods of policy evaluations and helps students writing own research paper in development economics.
