This course will look into different actions to protect the environment carried out by various actors, and think about norms on the environment. Many kinds of efforts are needed to cope with the environmental problems. For example, creation of a law is an important step, but it would not have an effect without activities to ensure the compliance. The government must act, but there are also other important actors. We will look into different actions to protect the quality of water and air, and the global environment. Students will be encouraged to think about means for protecting the environment from diverse viewpoints and ask questions.

Advanced Engineering Education Series Seminar invites famous researchers / teachers in the field of advanced engineering education and advanced technology leaders, enabling students to experience advanced technologies directly from the leaders.

Economic Development in Korea and Other Asian Countries

The purpose of this course is to improve the understanding of the Korean and the other East Asian economies in the global perspective. Also, the instructor will help the students to enhance their knowledge about theories of macroeconomics, international trade and economic development in the light of the Korean and the other East Asian experiences. Upon reviewing major models of economic development, this course will examine the century-old economic development of Korea and East Asia. Most of the emphasis will be given to the period after the Second World War. The lion’s share of the lecture materials will be devoted to review the evolution of the Korean economy during the last several decades in comparison with other East Asian economies. Major characteristics as well as the most important policy change of each decade will be explained. Also, more specific topics such as macroeconomic management, fiscal and monetary policy, role of financial market, firms and industrial policy, external economic relation, and social issues will be studied. In each subject, relevant theoretical backgrounds will be introduced. Also, international comparisons based on various sources of references will be made as much as possible to enhance the understanding of the lectures.

This course is an introduction to spatial econometrics and spatial statistics, both of which discuss how to apply a linear regression model to spatial data analysis. It is divided into two parts (Part I & Part II). Part I is a review of the classical linear regression model, which is the most general and widely used linear regression model. The review focuses on the important theories necessary in later discussions. Part II is concerned with the spatial econometrics and spatial statistics. It is discussed how to extend the classical linear regression model so that we can deal with spatial data in a linear regression modeling and prediction. The course aims to expose you to advanced topics in regression analysis and help you develop knowledge in dealing with spatial data.

Given the increasingly inter-connected and complex world we live in, most policy challenges can no longer be sufficiently addressed through a narrow, singular disciplinary lens. This course, primarily aimed at doctoral-level research students, adopts an inter-disciplinary perspective. The focus is not on description or narrative but rather to demonstrate to students how different disciplines identify research questions/shape hypotheses/and deploy appropriate research methods to answering those questions. It will also introduce students to the skills required in academic thesis writing at the doctoral level. A series of case study examples will be used to generate research questions and methods. For instance, how might economists and political scientists/IR address the issue of inequality, promoting economic growth, and global redistributive justice in developing countries? What theories and methods exist in each discipline? How differently do they frame research questions? What key skills are required for successful academic thesis writing?
