Advanced Engineering Education Series Seminar invites famous researchers / teachers in the field of advanced engineering education and advanced technology leaders, enabling students to experience advanced technologies directly from the leaders.

Futurology: Imagining the World of Tomorrow

Futurology (or Futures Studies) involves the study of the past and present to make educated guesses about the future. It draws on both the arts and sciences as a field of inquiry. This it does by grappling with complex philosophical questions concerning economic, political, cultural, and technological change but also by analyzing scientific data to make forecasts and predictions. In this introductory course we will examine how the future has been imagined in the past eras but also in our own era. Interdisciplinary in nature, the course will refer to ideas expressed in popular culture and the humanities as well as scientific studies. Upon completing the course, students will be familiar with key debates in futurology, possess their own viewpoints about emerging developments, and be more adept at envisioning and understanding social, environmental, and technological change.

Reading Wang Hui

In this course, we will read and discuss the book “The Politics of Imagining Asia,” written by one of the most important and influential scholars in today’s China, Wang Hui. Wang Hui is professor of Chinese literature and history at Tsinghua University in Beijing. His research interests range from Chinese intellectual history and modern literature to social and political theory. While his focus is on China, Wang Hui in the book discusses such broad topics as Orientalism, Max Weber, and the nation-state, as well as questions that have implications beyond the single country of China: Okinawa, Tibet, and the idea of Asia. One of the main thrusts of Wang Hui's thought is his critique of modes of modern knowledge that claims universality but has its peculiar origin in western Europe. As such, this course serves to challenge students to critically think about East Asia and China, both of their histories and current situation, as problems from a series of unconventional, in particular non-Western, perspectives, and by so doing develop their capability in historical conceptualization and critical analysis.

The International History of East Asia: New Perspectives

Course Description This course takes a new perspective on the international history of Japan and East Asia from the beginning of the 19th century to the immediate post-war period. Our readings will challenge the traditional nation-centered approach to important events. In addition to covering important concepts such as imperialism, conflict and war, etc., the course will also examine issues that transcend national boundaries, including immigration (karayuki-san, Japanese Americans), environmental degradation (the Fukushima Daikichi nuclear power incident), business transactions (the expansion of the market for textile products), and ideas (Pan-Asianism). We will also incorporate crucial historical topics such as race, ethnicity, and gender by investigating the eugenics movement in East Asia, comfort women, black internationalism, etc. This course also addresses international history beyond the region by studying the relations between East Asian countries and the Anglosphere, especially the UK and the US. Ultimately, this course shows how international history moves across national and racial boundaries, and how history is made not only by people in power (politicians, military leaders, intellectual) but also by ordinary people. Course Objectives: This course will give students an opportunity to encounter new perspectives about the international history of East Asia. Students are expected to comprehend multiple dimensions of international relations and learn how ordinary men and women have played significant roles in making history.
