"Explaining" Japanese Religion: A Critical Approach

This course explores ways to explain Japanese religions in English without resorting to stereotypes. At the same time, it is an introduction to the academic study of religion, which questions what we take for granted about religion, spirituality, and secularity. On successful completion of the course the student will have: --achieved a basic knowledge about historical and contemporary Japanese religions, being critical of stereotypical discourses on Japanese people and culture. --acquired a skill to explain Japanese religions to international neighbors in a well-informed as well as original way. --found it both fun and important to consider matters on religion academically and critically (which is different from attacking or disdaining)

This lecture covers selected three topics, neutrino, gravitational wave and dark matter, from the latest developments in the field of astro-particle physics. Lectures of each topic are given by three lecturers. 1) Neutrino Mass of neutrinos had been believed to be zero for a long time and the standard model of the particle physics was successfully established with this assumption and there has been no apparent contradiction with the experiments. However, the existence of non-zero neutrino mass and neutrino flavor mixings were discovered in 1998. These have been the first experimental findings which contradicts with the assumption of the standard model and thus, have given huge impact in the field. This lecture explains how the fundamental properties of neutrinos have been experimentally studied and remaining questions to be answered. 2) Gravitational wave Direct measurements of gravitational wave, which has been predicted by the general relativity, are expected to open the way to study the phenomena in the strong gravitational field and dynamical gravitational fields. Also, equation of state in neutron star is also expected to be determined based on the measurements. These could not be achieved by the electro-magnetic wave observations and provide new way to study the universe. Moreover, coordinated observations of the source of gravitational wave with electro-magnetic observations from early stage are expected to identify the source of the gravitational wave and their mechanism. On the other hand, size of the gravitational wave signal is too small and thus, direct observation had been difficult to realize. In this lecture, realistic methods to detect gravitational wave, observed signals in the experiments, obtained physics results and future directions are covered 3) Dark matter Dark matter is regarded as one of the most important topic in the field of astro-particle physics because dark matter is considered to play important role in the evolution of the universe and also, it is expected to give solutions or hints of various remaining questions in particle physics. There are three major methods to study dark matter. The first one is to use accelerator to create dark matter itself. The second one is to search for the signal from the annihilation of dark matters in the universe. The third one is to detect the collision of dark matter with the material in the detector. This lecture covers the basics and the recent studies of dark matter, details of direct measurement experiments and expected signals. These includes the past major experiments and also, the planned experiments in Japan and in the world.
