Case Studies in International Political Economy

Presenting his/her research orally and as a paper in English is now a must for policy specialists. Completing one's research as a paper and presenting it orally in English has become a must for policy specialists. The course is designed to help students write and present an original paper based on empirical research in topics related to international political economy. Participants will obtain firsthand experience on how to formulate research puzzles worthy of an audience, how to efficiently conduct research, how to learn from other people's work, and the merits of peer criticisms in that process. A presentation and submission of a research paper and Power Point slides is required for credit. The course will be conducted in English but is tailored to accommodate non-native speakers.

Futurology: Imagining the World of Tomorrow

Futurology (or Futures Studies) involves the study of the past and present to make educated guesses about the future. It draws on both the arts and sciences as a field of inquiry. This it does by grappling with complex philosophical questions concerning economic, political, cultural, and technological change but also by analyzing scientific data to make forecasts and predictions. In this introductory course we will examine how the future has been imagined in the past eras but also in our own era. Interdisciplinary in nature, the course will refer to ideas expressed in popular culture and the humanities as well as scientific studies. Upon completing the course, students will be familiar with key debates in futurology, possess their own viewpoints about emerging developments, and be more adept at envisioning and understanding social, environmental, and technological change.

Purpose The purpose of this graduate course is to expose students to understand the basic concepts and framework of public policy and governance as well as practical issues relating to sustainability in general; biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, poverty alleviation, peace-building, etc. The students will have an opportunity to learn the basic frameworks for analyzing policies and to deepen the understanding of management and policy concerns relating to sustainable development through interactive lectures, exercises, and group works. Learning Outcomes Targeted learning outcomes are: (i) conceptual understanding of policies and policy-making relating to sustainability and (ii) increased familiarity with practical aspects of management and policy concerns relating to sustainable development, especially the need for a holistic viewpoint and trans-boundary, collaborative approach. Course Description Sustainability science inquiry starts from the perception of a particular problem or a situation of individuals, organizations or a society at large, orients itself to elucidation of factors and mechanisms that explain how the problem has come about, and, as the case may be, leads to consideration of how to solve it or rectify the situation surrounding it. As such, sustainability science embraces an almost inherent inclination towards management and policy intervention. This course is designed to equip the students with both conceptual and practical tools needed to cope with management and policy-making/implementation tasks for the cause of sustainable development.

Issues and Methods in Japanese Studies

This course examines the issues and methods that constitute Japanese Studies as a field of study. We do so by reading and discussing a series of major, primarily historical, works on Japan written in English since 1945. What makes (and/or unmakes) Japanese Studies, which takes a country as the subject of study, an academic field and a form of knowledge? What is “Japan” in Japanese Studies? We will trace the history of Japanese Studies, its problematics, goals, methodologies, from 1945 to the present, in the post-1945 context of transformations of geopolitical configurations in East Asia, and changes in modes of intellectual inquiry (from modernization theory to postcolonial and postmodern studies, and then to post-postmodern model of globalization). We follow Foucault’s observation that knowledge is power but that does not mean Japanese studies has always served simply political purposes, i.e., particular goals and concerns of governments and states. We look at Japanese Studies as necessarily shaped by political interests but more importantly as a dynamic and creative form of humanistic knowledge.

Globalisation and War

It is a now a truism that we inhabit a fast-moving world where corporations and trade are often international, while finance is global because of virtual flows that operate 24/7. Similarly, we are used to swirling media images and the global exchange of cultural artefacts, or a social reality in which tourism and migration are a part of our daily vista. Finally, we are aware of how state-centric politics is both supplemented and rivalled by the supra- and sub-national, whether in the shape of international organisations, global social movements or techno-scientific innovations and risks. Processes such as these make distance over space less of an obstacle, while the conflation of time increases interdependency and produces a burgeoning global imaginary. This course examines some of these issues through philosophical interpretations of globalisation and concomitant theories of war.

Advanced Engineering Education Series Seminar invites famous researchers / teachers in the field of advanced engineering education and advanced technology leaders, enabling students to experience advanced technologies directly from the leaders.
